You won’t soon forget Michelle McLeod’s heartbreaking performance as a young traumatised member of a closed religious community. Sarah Polley’s stunning adaptation of Miriam Toews’ semi-autobiographical book follows the women in the community who have been repeatedly raped, beaten and defeated by their men. McLeod’s portrayal of gentle Mejal and her suffering cuts through resistance. What She Said’ Anne Brodie spoke with McLeod in Toronto.

On Monday night filmmaker Sarah Polley won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Women Talking, causing a tidal wave of cheers and love across Canada.
